What To Expect From a Balloon Sinuplasty Posted on March 14, 2024 by Arizona Desert Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat chronic (sinusitis lasting longer than 12 weeks), congestion and other sinus issues. Although balloon sinuplasty is minimally invasive, many people feel anxiety over the thought of undergoing a procedure. Let’s take a look at what you can expect from a balloon sinuplasty to help calm your nerves before your procedure. 1. Preparation Before the procedure, your provider will give you a list of specific instructions, including guidelines on eating, drinking and taking medication in the days leading up to the sinuplasty. 2. Anesthesia Balloon sinuplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia, but some cases may require general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, a small area of the body, in this case, the tissue lining your nose, is numbed. With general anesthesia, you are unconscious and unaware during the procedure. 3. Procedure During the procedure, your ENT provider or sinus specialist will insert a small, flexible balloon catheter into your nasal passages. The balloon is then inflated to gently widen the blocked sinus opening, allowing for better drainage and ventilation. The balloon will be inflated multiple times to clear the blockages if necessary. 4. Recovery You may need to rest at home for 24 to 48 hours following your surgery. Your provider might recommend the following post-surgery care instructions, including: Avoid blowing your nose for 24 to 48 hours Sleep with your head elevated to prevent congestion Rinse your nostrils with an ENT-approved nasal spray or sinus irrigation system Avoid strenuous activity, including sports or heavy exercise, for a week following your surgery Most patients can return to running around Loma Linda Park or hitting the gym within a few days or weeks, depending on their recovery speed. 5. Follow-Up Your provider will likely recommend you schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your recovery and estimate the procedure’s success. They may also provide additional instructions on post-operative care and necessary lifestyle changes to help maintain sinus health. Many patients experience significant improvement in their symptoms following balloon sinuplasty. Some patients may require additional treatments or procedures to achieve desired results. Balloon sinuplasty is an excellent option to treat chronic sinusitis, congestion and other sinus conditions with minimal discomfort.
